The Motivator 2 utilizes Bowflex's patented Power Rods, which provide resistance, or weight, that feels as good as or better than free weights--but without the inertia or risk of joint pain usually associated with free weights. You can hook one, two, three, four or all of your Power Rod units to the cable pulley system and go from as little as 5 pounds all the way up to 210 pounds of resistance.

They're precisely manufactured from a high-tech composite material under the highest quality control measures, then sheathed and tested four separate times to ensure quality and durability. The Power Rod units are so strong, you can flex them repeatedly but you won't be able to wear them out.

About Home Gyms
While offering the convenience of working out in the comfort and privacy of your own home, home gyms also allow you to focus on specific routines without having to wait in line or switch between a complex array of machines. In addition to improving strength, power, coordination, and muscular endurance, weight training can enhance weight reduction, enhance the immune and cardiovascular systems, and help prevent injuries. In general, home gym machines are compact units designed to strengthen and exercise many parts of the body. While no single home gym can provide a complete strength training solution, they are a convenient way to combine many exercises into a single unit. Some home gyms focus exclusively on upper-body workouts, while other, more advanced units focus on upper- and lower-body conditioning.

4 out of 5 stars My first Bowflex, reasonably happy so far   October 12, 2008
I've been more of a NordicTrack, treadmill, rowing machine kind of person but, given that the price seemed to be right, I decided to give the Motivator a try. Being new to the Bowflex world it's impossible for my to compare this model with the more advanced and probably more expensive alternatives but I will be sharing my first impressions and my experience with the machine so far.

- Delivery.
I assume that the experiences may vary, depending of where one lives. In my case, and what Amazon's offer may be in effect at the time of purchase. In my case, the shipper contacted me as soon as the box arrived into their warehouse and arranged for delivery the next day. The delivery person was very polite but also unwilling to help take the very heavy box into the basement, where I wanted the Bowflex installed.

- Assembly.
We opened the box on the driveway and took the components into the basement, one by one. The assembly itself took a couple of hours. All parts were missing but there are no spare screws or nuts so you must be careful. Everything is solid and good quality and everything fits. The manual is pretty good but you do need to be careful because there are 8-10 different bolts and screws and several types of nuts and washers. You will need a Phillips screwdriver and a wrench to complete the installation.

- Setup.
The manual is not so good when it comes to showing you how to configure the Bowflex for the different kinds of exercises but a little practice and some common sense would take you there.

- First try.
The manual suggests a 6-week program broken into 3 routines, each to be executed for 2 weeks. I just went through the first and simplest one today and it was okay. We were basically learning to configure the machine for the various exercises and checking to see if the manual covered everything needed to actually proceed with the workout. It wasn't too hard and, I am sure, it will seem easier after several sessions. There is a poster that shows some of the more popular exercises and the manual has dozens of them, broken down by muscles groups or parts of body.

- Overall impression.
Lacking a frame of reference other than my personal level of comfort, I would say that this is a good beginner's machine. I will be using it myself and so will my 2 sons. I am skeptical that 3 or 4-times-a-week 15-minute routines are going to turn us into muscle-bound male models but I expect to see SOME change. If it does not happen, I shall come back and modify my review to state that. As of right now, 4 stars should be fair.

5 out of 5 stars My first bowflex and loving it!   October 7, 2008
After years of advertisement and "I cannot afford that!", now I have one of my own and I love it.

First of all, praise to Amazon.com for properly shipping it by sending it to a Freight company rather than ... the regulars. It came in one piece and everything was in proper order, no dent.

Second, it took me about 2 hours to built this machine.

Last, I really love this machine, I tried it a little and I have to say it allows me to work lots more muscles than I have before, compared to my Weider's Total Bodyworks 5000.

Not much else to say but to get back to evolve myself into a leaner person.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Needed and a GREAT Price   October 4, 2008
After using the Total Gym for years, Bowflex is a refreshing change. I don't regret buying the Total Gym but it's so nice not to have to work out on an incline ALL THE TIME and I paid LESS for the bowflex than I did for the total gym some 6 or 7 years ago.
I'm a 44 yo female and this machine is exactly what I wanted. It was easy to put together, I can do lots and lots of different exercises and I found it was relatively easy to go from one to the next. I'm not looking to build great gobs of muscle mass. I just want to tone and keep the muscles I already had from working out before and as you may know, women especially begin to lose their muscle mass (which burns calories) as they age so this has been wonderful for me. The machine seems sturdy and well built so I think it'll last a long time. Best of all Amazon offered it for a great price and free shipping.

The downsides are: This model does not come with a DVD which would have been so much better than the "poster" of exercises you get which are explained more in depth in the book that comes with the machine. To my knowledge, no DVD exists using this particular Bowflex but one of the other DVD's for a different bowflex might work??? Another thing is I guess I'm sort of "spatially challenged" because though I DID read the dimensions of the machine it sure seems to take up more space than I thought it would. One last thing is it borderline doesn't work my legs as much as maybe I would like but you can compensate a bit for that by doing more reps and "holding" them for slightly longer. If I have to, I'll drill holes in the tabs and will upgrade that way but so far, it's okay.

All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase. It was a great deal and I'm sure I'll get lots of use out of it for at least a couple of years and then more than likely I'll buy another bowflex however if you're someone to whom space is at a premium in your house then you might want to look into one of the other, more expensive, more space saving designs that bowflex offers.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but disppointed in the upgrade options   September 9, 2008
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

This is a nice unit, full of exercises that really do help. I've owned it a few weeks and worked out on it religiously and I can really start to see great changes in my body.

The bad news: The 210 pounds of weight resistance it provides was quickly outgrown, and I didn't know this was the ONLY model Bowflex makes that is NOT upgradable. Oh, I bought two sets of extension rods, only to find out you can't put them anyone without making "modifications" to the machine. I added on two of the rods bringing it to 310 pounds total (which is good because my bench press is already 270 - a month ago I couldn't bench press my keyboard), but I see I will outgrow this system in less than a year.

For light workouts this is probably a great system, but if you're interested in continuing to build muscle mass and strength as far as you can, this is one to steer clear from, simply because you can't upgrade it easily (and not at all, unless you're probably voiding the warranty).

5 out of 5 stars Easy to assemble and use   August 9, 2008
My Bowflex was delivered right on time. It was easy to assemble and is easy to use.
