 It's exactly what I wanted December 12, 2008
Not sure what some of the other reviewers are unhappy about. I had used this contraption at the gym and found it allowed me to do crunches much more effectively, and without neck strain, than I was able to do on my own. And the quality is fine. I will say that the manufacturer's assembly instructions could be (a lot) clearer, but the additional instructions provided by the seller in this case helped enormously. And we got it put together relatively quickly without too much trouble. (It also helped that I had used one before and knew how it was supposed to turn out.)

When I first purchased this item, I was skeptical that it would target the abdominals more than a regular crunch. After reading some of the reviews I went for the slightly more expensive one since I would be using it frequently. Right out of the box, I thought this must have been a cheaper knockoff of the original because the instruction manual and the pictures on the box looked like copies of a copy or still images from a home camcorder. I have to say that once it is assembled and used correctly, you will get up "feeling the burn" in the targeted areas.Even when you do the oblique crunches, you don't feel the strain on your neck and shoulders you would without the tool
Tip: Make sure to really pull down hard with your hands/arms while doing the crunches, otherwise, you will feel the same neck stress as a regular crunch. Intuitively, you would think that if you're oversupporting your head, it wouldn't work. But try it. You won't feel it work the first time until you get up (if you do less than you normally do), but it then becomes apparent that it did it's job.
I'm still not sure if it's a knockoff, but I don't care. It does what I paid for it to do. I get a way more intense abominal workout in half the time. Also, my neck, shoulders, and back don't hurt when I'm done.... only the abs!! I hope this was helpful

I've used professional models of these ab trainers, and this item appeared to be comparable in the photos. Upon opening the package & inspecting the parts, the metal tubing used seems to be adequate,and the hardware looks to be typical "Made in China" junk. The armpads & headrest are vinyl-covered pieces of foam over wood backing, poorly stapled & finished. The assembly instruction book is horrendous. Vague and tiny hand-drawn diagrams with confusing, poorly written instructions. I was shorted one screw, and supplied with four plastic spacers that do not appear in the assembly diagram, and are not mentioned ANYWHERE in the instructions. A big disappointment.
